[Vwdiesel] TDI head question

I'm not sure I follow you...but one technique I've seen when an
opening is slightly underdimension, is to knurl it, with the
deformed metal changing the dimension.
In your case you want the lifter to slide. A contrary example is
knurling a shaft, so that a bearing fits snugly and does not spin.
(A technique used to fix rear axel shafts after a spun bearing
which redimensioned the shaft.)
The ugliness from the breaking of the lifter, may effectively act as
a knurl causing a firm fit.
