Subject: turbo 1.6 or non turbo advice

My '89 Jetta with a "rebuilt" 1.6 na engine

 I bought
and installed is smoking blue . is burning oil
like crazy?? Curious if you
guys could buy either engine for about the same money if you would go with
the turbo?

We do not really have all the information needed to give you a good answer. So
grab the pen and fill us in.

" rebuilt " by who and when ? There are a few simple test that sort things out
fast.
I use a calling card to get a handle on blow-by ----pull line at VC start engine and
see how far card bends compared to a good one.
Then get a handle on oil use . Accurate ---cardboard under engine while parked
to show drips.
Make sure that diaphragm has not been punctured --Vacuum pump.

Then crack one line at the time while running to see if you have a LAZY cylinder.
They should all be much the same.

No need to panic yet --- it could be a very simple answer.

Turbo or not ? --- get the turbo it is a better engine even if you remove the turbo.

Let us know numbers on pump . And what type of oil you use.

Before you know --you will be blowing a Prius off the road.

Hagar.
