I would be less concerned with compression as long as it starts ok and
doesn't burn too much oil.
I would only use band-aid additives for a last-gasp engine. They
generally cause more harm than good in the long run.
I had a '79 Rabbit 1.5 dsl. The engine was BAD! However, I used anything
and everything in my attempt to keep it running until I could afford the
money and time to do it. I used that "Restore" stuff in the silver can.
I've used Lucas oils stabilizer in copious amounts. STP. I've also used
(sic) a popular Teflon based additive. All in all, I squeezed another
10,000mi out of it before I torn it down. Remarkably, the engine was
very clean inside.
