Well, for one thing, the stuff at the pump is made with soybeans,
which is a piss poor crop to make biodiesel out of in the first
place. Nobody would bother, except for all the farm subsidies that
have created mountains of soybeans going to waste, essentially. Canola
is far better, 3-4 times as much oil per acre, but that's nothing
compared to lots of other crops, like oil palm.
And some of the prices I've seen for what it costs some people to
make it out of WVO show that they aren't doing it properly, i.e., not
recovering all the methanol, which is the only real cost when using
WVO, other than your time.
