Bart the Bon-Ami trick is the real thing ---recommended by GM . It is used as an abrasive
to get the rings to seat and deglaze the cylinder walls.
I never used it because I can not get it here. I have an engine just waiting for the stuff.
It is used in many places --- and it is a perfect treatment in your case. Before a teardown.
Everything you told us points to rings not seating. The smoke is a different issue.
Advancing the pump a TAD will cure that.
"Stinky" ? .
Hagar.
PS: A problem like that here --would make me scourer the bushes for a can of Bon-Ami.
