I've looked at vent window change instructions too.  Now I'm not sure on
the drilled ventwings.  From the pics it would appear that the wing and
the post are one unit.  I'd have to look at mine.  You can look at
yours!  On the solid wings, the upright post is a separate piece (the
one you rivet and screw into the door frame). I can't remember on the
glued ones but I'm pretty sure that they are two pieces and the long
upright piece can slide out the bottom of the door.  It is hard to get
the bracket where the pop-rivet goes, through the top window slot in the
door- I'm sure of this, no matter how you turn and twist things.  I
recently replaced my boy's '81 glued vent wings with solid wings and
don't remember having to take them out the window slot.  Otherwise, the
instructions are great and accurate!

As far as the plastic- don't worry too much about it- I cut it with a
knife so I can get to the 10mm bolts to take the window down and just
tape it back with packing tape.  If the plastic is shot, replace it with
some good clear vinyl for storm windows from you local hardware store.
It is cheap and easy to adhere with silicone or the like.

I does have the 4 sp and according to

Well, somebody has already replaced the driver's side for you!  ALL of
the glued ones fall off sooner or later- usually sooner.  The drilled
ones are kinda hard to find.  Solid ones are fairly common.  My '84
Rabbit L has drilled, the donor '84 from which an engine was pulled had
the glued.  Go figure.  Some of the Jettas will fit- I think.  Now you
will have to find a yard with the goods for your car.  I'm sure you will
find more stuff you need as time goes on.  Have you checked out the
shift boot under the car?  They are usually toast by now and pretty good
to have (buy a new one).  Good luck with your new project!  I know that
you will enjoy the simplicity and honesty of the 1.6NA.  Does it have a
4spd tranny?  Mine does.  From what I understand, the later model
trannys have a pretty tall 4th gear and mileage is good without having
to shift so much.  I haven't put the engine in mine due to too many
projects but am looking forward to it. I know nothing about parts in GA.
I'm in Idaho. 

By the way, I have found that it is easier to remove the ventwing post
out the bottom of the door.  Take the window loose and let it sit in the
bottom of the door and you can snake that post right out through the
bottom of the door without skinning it up or busting spot welds on your
door where the glass slides up and down.

The plot thickens on the vent window(s). The passenger side was glued
and the drivers side is drilled!

Yes, you need the timing belt cover is important.  Dirt and dust can
wear the cogs on the gears causing the belt to jump.  If you have the
"gluded" vent wing hinges you will likely need both sides soon.  They
are easy to change out once you find some solid or drilled hinge
replacements.

I have owned a TDI Jetta for a while but always wanted a Rabbit diesel.
Now I have secure one. A 1983 vintage Rabbit L 2 door diesel. 1000 miles
on the injectors, 10k on the pump, 20k on the timing belt. 125K on the
vehicle. A couple of things come to mind that (I think) need attention.
There is no cover for the timing belt...does it need one. There is no
vent window on the passenger side. Trying to find one. Any ideas where
the best junkyard is in the middle GA area? TIA, Troy
