  Any 83 I've seen came with the drilled windows (or fixed).  I've replaced 
several and the best sources are GTI's or Cabriolets.  There's one screw 
under the rubber and one rivet (and a bolt?) under the door panel.  Don't 
cut the plastic shield, just peel it off.  On a warm day it's pretty easy to 
peel the plastic and restick it when done.  It's a release adhesive.  It's 
a puzzler to pull the window post up and out but a bit of a twist in the 
right direction and it does come right out.  You fight it for about 10 
minutes and then suddenly it pops out!  THEN you have to figure how 
it did it to put the new one in!  ;-)
