When I first got my '86 NA Jetta four years ago the temp would spike very
quicky to the red zone. After much looking, thinking, reading and swapping of
parts I took each coolant hose off in turn and blew air through them. In the
small line that goes to the overflow bottle there is a reducer in the line with
a hole approx. 1/16". There was a very small bit of silicone gasket sealer
blocking the hole. I unblocked the hole and the cooling system was fine. I
added in the line a clear fuel filter with a metal screen. I can now see if any
crud builds up. It is remarkable how much has accumulated in four years.
