[Vwdiesel] Coolant system

When I first got my '86 NA Jetta four years ago the temp would spike very 
quicky to the red zone.  After much looking, thinking, reading and swapping of 
parts I took each coolant hose off in turn and blew air through them.  In the 
small line that goes to the overflow bottle there is a reducer in the line with 
a hole approx. 1/16".  There was a very small bit of silicone gasket sealer 
blocking the hole.  I unblocked the hole and the cooling system was fine.  I 
added in the line a clear fuel filter with a metal screen.  I can now see if any 
crud builds up.  It is remarkable how much has accumulated in four years.
