  So long as the engine's running fine the turbo won't gum up.  It'll just 
have a 
layer of moon dust on exhaust parts.  If the guides, turbo seals, maybe a 
ring or too much blowby, bad injectors, maybe even an EGR then the 
exhaust starts getting gummy.
  I just finished a tank of fuel in the Jetta.  Got 35mpg last tank, with 
boost aneroid disconnected.  Got 34 this tank with it connected.  I 
drove it harder plus it spent a little more time idling with A/C on.  Both 
tanks were with A/C on 95% of the time.  I'd say the POSSIBLE drop 
in mpg was WAY outweighed by the VASTLY improved driveability!  
I didn't feel like I'd get run over before I could get going.
