Gavrik,
I've had a '91 Eco that died in an accident, and now have a '92 Eco... I
think the turbo on these just helps the fuel burn a little more
efficiently. Power went up slightly over the N/A (52 to 68 HP - don't
know the torque numbers).
Both of mine have been extremely cheap to operate - 42-48 MPG, 260K
miles on the first before the accident - found the other last year with
125K miles on it - now up to 160K.
Temp gauges on both tend(ed) to show hot, but I checked them out
thoroughly with an infrared gauge and neither really was hot, so I think
there's a general temp sender/gauge mismatch somehow in these models.
Temp gauge reads lower when other electrical accessories are on, so
there's an issue somewhere with that, but so far not worth trying to
figure out.
Can't think of any other major problems with them - I got 100K miles on
each set of tires and brake pads. Got 200K on first exhaust system on
the '91 - which is really impressive in the salt here in Wisconsin.
Haven't yet had to take a head off of them, so can't comment on the ease
/ lack of ease there. Water pump change just requires removing lots of
stuff in the way, but not technically difficult.
Overall they're an improvement to change oil on over the '90 my parents
had - A/C lines are shaped so you can get the filter out easier on the
'91/'92.
Extra engine power is a noticeable improvement over N/A: enough for me -
I never get left behind anywhere...
That's as much as I can say about them... Hope that's what you're
looking for.
Chris

Thanks Val, Loren and 'Libbybapa' for the dope on the ECO Diesel.
It sounds like the ECO Diesel engine was not really an improvement
over what had been produced earlier. No aneroid -- does not seem like
a good thing. How do they make it work?

The type of turbo diesel that was found in the Rabbits went from 83'
to 86' (some in 87') and the ones that appeared in 92' (some in 91')
were of the ECO type. Is that correct?
If so, then a guy that wants the newer golf type body, and the
'classic' TD engine, should search for vehicles from 85' to 87'.
