[Vwdiesel] Engine knock - TD motor

I have my recently acquired '81 Caddy with a TD motor from an '86 Jetta TD in it. The engine runs but it makes a horrid knocking noise when it's running. It seems to be coming from the #1 end of the engine. I am looking for some suggestions for diagnosis.

Symptoms:
- It happens when running and sounds to be once per crank revolution
- I have white smoke out the tail pipe that smells more like oil than coolant to me
- The coolant overflow bottle pressurizes when the car is running and fills up pretty fast
- As the engine accelerates, so does the knock, proportional to the engine speed.

Possible thoughts:
- Bent rod....I will be pulling the oil pan to check the bottom end this weekend
- Bad valve...it has hydraulic lifters, could these also be involved?
- Bad lifter?
- Head gasket bad? This could be why the coolant is pressurizing and the knock could be from coolant in the combustion chamber

Any thoughts are welcomed and appreciated.

I bought the truck for $400 and I want to turn it into my daily driver...help is always appreciated!!!!!

Thanks,
Mikey
