It appears I will need the special socket (12pt?) for the turbo to exh
manifold
bolts, or is there something else I can use? Any other special tools I will
need
for a complete teardown of this engine? I have the head bolt socket. I'm
assuming I'll need something to ream the cylinder ridges?

Those bolts are just 12 pt, 12mm normal tools. Two come out pretty well
with a socket and universal or flex socket. The other two are easies by far,

with a deep offset box end wrench. Don't loose those, they're about $35
each at the dealer! I'm working on a reasonable source since my Jetta
keeps losing them. Usually a ridge isn't an issue. If you're doing new
pistons and all then you can just work a bevel to the lower edge and then
drive the pistons out.
Early Jetta engines and trannies drop out the bottom easiest but A2...
I'd use a hoist too.
