Well, I unhooked the injectors one by one and I love the spray of diesel.  That aside, there was no reduction to the knocking sound. I think that eliminates the injectors as the culprit.  Although as Hagar put it, when you step on it, the marbles sound like cannonballs.

 

I plan on checking the timing today to see if it may be one tooth off on the cam sprocket (goodness, I hope not).

 

Then it’s on to dropping the oil pan and checking the bottom end for it’s status. Is there any way to check the bearings down there w/o taking that all apart?

 

In case you haven’t guessed, I don’t like to take stuff apart unless I have to. If stuff is working, why take it apart…especially when my wife is watching!!!!

an injector stuck open.
Loosen a line and see if you can make the knock go away. A VW diesel is 
likely to blow a gasket or worse. It sounds like a mechanical problems to
gasser guys.
I should run on 3 cylinders , so you can sort it out in no time. If it is not fuel
knock --- then I step aside ---to let the REAL mechanics here take over.
400 dollars ? ----sounds like a steal.

Wow, great deal!
Sounds like you have a couple problems. The pressurizing is from a blown
head gasket. The knock could be from a rod bearing or injector. Rods 
don't usually get bent in these engines unless someone hydraulic'd the 
cylinder and even then... The knock could be from water getting to the 
tip of the injector and damaging it so it could be related but still two 
problems. I'd run the injectors while in the process of doing the head 
gasket.
