One worry is that gear oil does not work well as a bearing lube, so if it thinned out the grease too much, the wear on the balls and races inside the CV could have been increased. If the bearings and races are not pitted, its probably OK. I've had wheel
bearings fail on my 4WD when the inner axle seals leaked, letting gear oil wash out the grease around them.
