The seal that failed is the cap seal that fits over
the  inner area in the drive flange (covers the "C"
clip that holds the drive flange in). Most folks are
unaware this seal exists. It is NOT the drive flange
seal. That seal is tapped into the transaxle case and
is visable and can only be replaced if the drive axle
flange is removed. The seal that is leaking in your
case is replaced w/ the drive flange installed.

Yours may just have come loose. Its a press fit
(tapped in w/ a socket and a mallet) and if its not
put in square, it will distort and pop out later.
Remove the drive axle on that side. Clean all the
grease out of the drive axle flange. Take a sharp
screwdriver and drive it straight through the oil cap
seal and pry it out. Tap in a new seal using an
appropriate sized socket, extension and hammer. TAP IT
IN STRAIGHT! (I think this is a VW dealer only item)
Repack the drive flange and inner CV joint. Replace
drive axle. This is not a bad job.

Although the gear oil has high pressure additives, it
will not lube the CV joint properly. Eventually the
joint balls will gall if not taken care of.
