Cruisin at Mark 1.6
Ahh its come to me;a thermocouple in the exhaust...Would this show max temp at perfect leanness when cruisin?
But what is happening at steady-state say when coasting at 50mph [on the flat]
On a diesel "LEAN" means just enough fuel to do the job. "RICH" means more than needed.
The "JOB" means pushing the pistons.
On a gasser "JOB" means pushing pistons but also cooling the engine.
Mark Shepherd I am tickled pink to tell you that I studied Mixture control in UK at
Hamble in 1955 --- and I passed the final exam.
A couple of weeks ago , a gorgeous blonde walked in at sat right down here by the computer.
She looked at me and said ---you don't remember me do you ?------she had me stumped ----
then she said -- I was the secretary that handled your exam papers at Hamble. ------that I
never asked her for a date when I had the chance --proves that I am not all there.
Yes Mark I do know about those sparkplugs --- they are NIFTY.
To disappoint you ---- no a thermo in exhaust on a diesel does no work that way.
However an opacity indicater in exhaust ----- would tell you if the filter needs changing.
On a gasser the control is called "Mixture" control. and the indicator an "EGT".
On a diesel the control is called "Fuel adjuster" (or like) the indicator is called
"Pyrometer".
The most important difference between gasser and diesel , is the fact that
a diesel likes running lean ---a gasser does not.
If you run some gassers on the lean side of peak ---they self destruct.
Right now I have an irresistible urge to go for a joyride in a 1984 Turbo 1.6L
Rabbit.
Hagar.
PS: More mixture later.
