[Vwdiesel] Green Striped Engine

It could be that the black you remember was the cast iron.  On the 1.6
that I have I thought it had gotten hot and scorched the paint but upon
closer inspection, realized it was unpainted except for the green
stripe!  All other engines I have seen are just painted green over the
entire block.

but I remember it being black too.  Weren't a lot of factory
replacements 
sold it seems.  A dealer an hour or two away had something like 5
complete 
engines they were selling for around 2K several years ago.  Don't recall
if 
they were TD or NA.  Dad was really tempted to buy a couple.  At least
he 
DID buy all TWO that were left of factory turbos when I came across a 
surplus outfit dumping a bunch of VW stuff.  :)  Missed out on
everything 
else.  :(
