So, if you had the complete code I suppose that one could get with VW
and find the manufacturing information to mate engine with S.N.?
Interesting but doesn't explain the green stripe. It's gotta be a
replacement block from VW. Remanufactured or new, I don't know. Hagar
said that the striped 1.5L on Ebay doesn't have the code stamped in
it--- Yours does. Go figure.

Found the engine number. It's conveniently located right below the
point where the upper radiator hose connects to the head. All I can see
is "ME" which is the code for a naturally aspirated 1.6 D. I can't see
the rest of the code.

I think that it is stamped on the block near the head-surface in the
same area as all the casting numbers. If you are looking at the engine
it would be above the vaccuum pump. I'm beginning to think that the
striped blocks were German VW manufactured blocks for dealership
installation - warranty work and the like.
