I pulled apart the case from a '73 bus that had been driven into the ground.  
The engine had two cracked pistons.  The thrust bearing was way out of spec.  
Valve guides were flopping around with the valves.  But the crank was 
beautiful.  When mic'd it turned out to be spec for brand new.  No detectable wear.  
It seems that an outfit could just grind the mains or rods independently on a 
crank (just a single journal for that matter, but that would waste bearings) 
and potentially save time on their end and save a grinding on the crank.
