NAFTA killed my sawmill with cheap lumber from Canada, now globalization
is destroying my second career in IT. I can't even pay my student loan
payments
-- why the hell should farmers get welfare?

Gee, low prices, OSHA, environmentalists and liabilty insurance/lawsuit
threats closed ours down LONG before anyone ever heard of NAFTA, about
20 YEARS before. They first revamped to handle "toothpicks" then that
got kaboshed too.
I've never been a big advocate of farm subsidies, orchard farmers don't
and never did get any AFIK. Most developed countries do subsidize all
kinds of industries. This country doesn't. Seems if they are going to
make an exception, farms would be a good one.
Low prices is the reason the small farm doesn't make it. Bankrupt all
the big farms and food will be less available and prices would go up.
Prices go up and only those who could afford to buy up the bankrupt
farrms would have the land. They control the production and the prices
stay up and they get rich. Farming makes money but it ain't a shortcut
to wealth, now anyway. It's also a good way to lose money. Buy at
retail, sell at wholesale and used to be the only leagalized gambling
in most states. ;-)
