Loren –

I have been out of this loop for a few days, but I want to chime in here.

I have been wrestling with my newly acquired 1.6TD Caddy for a couple of weeks now. It spun a bearing on Cyl #2 and ended up doing a number on the crank. It honed down the crank journal to close to 0.5mm undersize.

I have pulled a 1.6 NA crank out of one of my extra blocks and plan on swapping that out for the time being. AFAIK there is no difference in the actual crank, other than the chance of extra hardening on the TD crank (which is now gone from journal #2). However, there is a difference in how the timing gear attaches to the end of the crank. The 1.6 NA has the classic Woodruff Key which is prone to failure under high stress conditions (or randomly as the case may be). The 1.6TD crank has a chamfered notch in it with corresponding nook in the gear. This spreads the forces out a bit more evenly. The NA crank is pre’82. The TD crank is ‘85-86.

I plan on using the NA crank for a while, until I can afford the full engine rebuild. I will have the TD crank ground to either 0.5mm or 0.75 mm undersize (for the corresponding replacement rod bearings) depending on the machinist’s interpretation of the damage thus far. Then the TD crank will go right back in!!!!

Anywho, that’s my $0.02!!!

Mikey
