AFAIK there is no difference in the actual crank, other than the chance of
extra hardening on the TD crank (which is now gone from journal #2).

My 85 TD has a crank out of an 83 or 84 NA Rabbit. Same noses.
Dropped it in when time frame wasn't practical to get the thrust
built back up and crank ground from the original. They have to be
completely ground after a weld up. Local shops wanted way too
much money. I could send it out and have it welded AND ground
for less. Just didn't have time at the moment. It's still sitting in the
shop with a 1.5 crank with one rough rod journal.
There is ONE other difference I found. A VW number is raised on
the TD crank where it's recessed (both cast in) on the NA crank.
