Yes Todd you are advancing the timing when you turn top of pump
towards the rear of the car on your model.
The starting point of " Hillbilly" timing is as follows.: Flywheel exactly TDC
camshaft slot exactly parallel and timing marks on pump and sprocket
exactly in line. Cold start just making contact with cam.( feel by hand)
lever is splined and can be repositioned as required.
When the pump sprocket timing mark lines up exactly with mark on pump
that is where internal cam just start to push on high pressure piston.
That makes it a totally SAFE starting point. Timing is retarded.
>From there on you do things by ear by feel and performance.
Make a really good scribe line to start with ---- that way you can always
find your way back.
Hillbilly timing is very time consuming ---- but worth every delightful hour.
When you move pump --- do so in very very small steps. When you get to
the peak performance , a pencil line makes a difference.
WARNING : do not go too far advanced --- just enough to make her sound
real happy.
Why does Bentley timing fail on older Rabbits ? ---- everything on these diesels
affect the optimum timing point. Valves lift sooner , injectors opens sooner
compression is not like new , etc etc. Remember VW publish timing specks
according to German conditions. 45 cetane or better ,brand new pump and injectors.
I do suggest that those of you who are unsure of yourself use the dial indicator.
Todd : by the way a differential tester is a great tool.
On a VW that runs fine do I do a compression test ? sometimes NOT .
If I am not going to correct compression I may find more important things to do.
On VW's with say one lazy cylinder , like my 1982 1.6L NA Rabbit , a small
starter relay and a pushbutton on dash is a real treat. Install the new type glowplugs
they do not burn out so fast. With indicator light on dash (connected to buss) on a cold start , just lean on the button in 30 second intervals till the lazy cylinder picks up.
Works for me like a charm. I am using the old relay , but to go in style change relay
that way you get "afterglow".
Timing and fueling are done according to taste. Some go for maximum power , some go for no smoke (me).
On the turbo I prefer to not use the "Space ship" in general. But if I use it
it will be set to cut in at more than 5 psi boost.
well I am rambling on as usual. ---indicates that I am dealing with a subject I like.
Hagar.
PS: setting the turbo for no smoke gives some astounding mileage figures.
Remember smoke does not propel a car. And Geezerdom is the shits.
