I used to do a lot of that. Grew up on a farm, cheap, Scottish blood and
all that. Then I got married, kids, time was a little shorter and I didn't
always have the convenience of dropping what I was doing and fix
something. I started doing cost effective "while I'm there" type of
stuff. My wife got tired of having to swap cars when something failed
and so did I. Now I try and do it right (reasonably) rather than keep it
cheap.
I've pushed that line of thinking onto my Dad fairly well but having
trouble
with his brothers he's in cahoots with on the orchard. They were
rebuilding the rollers on the Lamborghini crawler a year or two ago
and were only going to replace the one, failed, broken roller and the
bearings that caused the failure, which was caused by failed seals.
It took WEEKS to convince them to replace ALL the seals and bearings
while the track was off. Even got them to do BOTH sides! Plus a couple
other idler bearings, etc. Otherwise another would have broken and
put it out of comission for another few months, one after the other.
The only thing I tended to tear right into was the engine of any of my
cars. I always wanted to know the condition of what I was depending on.
DIdn't want the engine to quit on me somewhere so I was always irking
Dad by tearing whatever I got, clear down and doing rings and bearings. ;-)
Nice to "know" though. :)
     Loren
