[Vwdiesel] Timing 101 question please

This should be an easy one for you all.
That Golf Steam stuff is real serious, I need to read
up on that!!!!

Anyway, I think I am going back to stock 1.6TD
Finally pulled apart my failed 1.9NA with broken
lifters.
Review: the motor ran fine for 15K, but always "felt"
as if clearance was to close.
It had a hot start issue needing 7 or 8 rotations to
start without glow plugs when hot. Pulling cold start
seemed to help.
This was agreed to be retarded timing, so it was
increased .10, obviously too much. This did fix that
hot start issue but the lifters broke @500 miles
later.

Question??
1. Is it possible for a motor to run 500-1000 miles
with valve contact, assuming hydraulic valves are
lessening the impact on valve stem and cam?

Or, could the valves have been hitting all along,
there were 2 head gaskets on this motor, to allow for
additional clearance? thanks Overland, your the best.

2. If the timing was advanced above spec, would the
intake or exhaust valves make contact with pistons?

3. Does rotating the pump to set timing stroke not
only controls the point at which fuel is injected into
TDC piston stroke but machanically moves cam as well?

Here is what I found:
1. Timing cam did not slip, that is for sure, cam bolt
was at proper torque.
2. #1 Ex. valve lifter exploded, valve keeper gone.
#2 Ex. valve cracked on the surface to cam. Valves
not bent, head is repairable.
All exhaust valves hitting
#1 and #2 have deeper ridges on top of piston, can
barley feel ridges on #3 and #4 for valve contact.

In the end, I feel sure #1 exhaust lifter was cracked
for some time and finally exploded from lack of oil.

Any expert opinion welcome. Thanks so much..<>
