Gavrik asked :

  Is it
common knowledge among diesel people that this is a bad practice?

Common I don't know ---but I am sure glad you mentioned it. My 1982 1.6
is running without cover.

An anecdote is in order. When I was a young whippersnapper it was common
to put small 2 cycle 50 cc engines on pushbikes. A grooved steel roller was
used on rear wheel. In those days rubber was scarce so a new tire was black
market stuff. I was convinced that the roller would wear out tire in no time.

As it turned out the roller wore out and the tire was fine. So yes add a bit of grit and
water there goes your pulley in no time.

To hold pulley if you are scrapping it ??? piece of cake , a pipewrench
with extension and a breaker bar.

So thank you Gavrik.

Hagar.
