Hagar,

The black coating...
I thought it was a baked-on graphite coating. At first I thought it was
just gunk built up over the years, but it wouldn't wipe or scrub off.
But I found that it would get very slick in presence of fuel. Makes
sense that it needs to be free to move. May very well be a anodized
coating. That is a low point in the pump and would need extra protection
against water and corrosion.

I'm not sure of the anodizing process, but bluing on our guns is a
controlled corrosion process. The metal is pickled in a weak acid.
