[Vwdiesel] 180 off on pump? (was head gasket - black smoke)

Yes indeedy.  At 180 off, it will not run.
Basic check, cam lock plate has to be installed properly... shim stock under
both sides to ensure parallelism to head, and timing mark on flywheel HAS to
be  on the mark.  If not, loosen the cam bolt one turn, and tap the back of
the cam sprocket with a small punch through the convenient hole that is in
the tin to free it of the taper, so it can turn freely, and turn the engine
with the cam locked to make the flywheel mark line up perfectly, then
retighten the cam pulley, THEN time the pump.  To do this, forget the lock
pin in the pump, it serves no purpose other than to hold the pump steady
while you fiddle with the belt during installation.
