Pun intended.
Du to my age I keep saying that I only got a few laps left.
I did both --- Head and block.
First make sure you have a can of Steel Blue. for newbies that is ink
used by machinists ---love the smell.
Say we are dealing with a good head. The most important tool is a
flat surface.---------if you have good ideas let us know.
Remember we a Lapping --NOT correcting a twisted head..
To keep grit from getting to rings , I set all pistons same height and
covered the rings with an inch of Vaseline.
Metal does flow under pressure and I found raised metal around headbolt
threads on block ---- I sanded it down.
The only regret I have --I did not de-glace cylinders. I intended to test the
Bon-Ami procedure ---- only to find I could not get the stuff.
Will trade VW parts for a can of Bon-Ami scouring powder.
Engine works great ----no leaks found so far.
About lapping -- if I machine a spindle for the rear wheels --I machine
the thread oversize --then fine valve lapping compound to get exact fit
on nut. (too fussy not needed)
Do a lappa doo dah.
Hagar.
