On a polished crank, yes, they will leak.
You should always take the polish off a rotating surface that contacts a lip
seal with 220 grit wetordry paper first (more uniform grit). Works much
better then. THe seal gets lubrication from the tiny grooves that hold oil,
and is supposed to last longer.  Real shiny is not the best, early seal
failure is SUPPOSED to result. Always lube a seal well on installation for
best results too.
Unlike Loren, I have NEVER had a seal stop leaking. They just get worse.
And worse.  And worse... but good stuff happens to Loren, what with all the
clean living and such. ;-)
