[Vwdiesel] Outer CV Joint Binding

Ok.  What model years are 'early vw' and which are 'late vw'?  By
'late vw' do you mean the golf style vehicles introduced in 85'?  What
I have is a 83' Rabbit.


  What I KNEW as early and late outer joints was by the type of retaining 
clip for the joint to the axle.  The early ones used a clip that was in the 
inner race and required snap ring pliers or procedure, to get the joint off.  

The late style had a spring clip on the axle and you simply whack the 
joint off or push until it clicked on.
  Now a early/late might refer to the larger or smaller dia inner CV joint, 
if you're talking axles not just outer joints.  Not sure if they changed 
the outer after the clip change.  That happened about '80.
