Well, I got ahold of someone from the TDIclub.com VAG-COM list who was
generous enough to come over with his computer, cable and software.
Turned up code P1248, Injection start regulation: control deviation.
Then we poked around and found that the injection timing was at about
21ºBTDC. Or was that -21º. Either way, looks like I jumped time. Now,
I have to pull the bellypan, line up the marks and hope like I've never
hoped before that the injection pump jumped time and that the crank and
cam are still in harmony with each other. I'd love to be able to check
whether the pistons got introduced to the valves, but if it runs again
(runs now, just noisy) I'm not pulling the head and I can't really
afford a borescope at this point. Can't even really afford VAG-COM.
The belt's fairly loose and the problems did start about the time I was
downshifting my way off I-635. I'm sort of thinking that this may have
something to do with a timing belt change last October or so. I haven't
looked at the procedure in a long time, but I'm thinking the shop put
the belt on loose or didn't affix the tensioner properly. Kind of a
bummer because I really like the shop that did the work and I'd hate for
events to change my opinion. In the mean time, as usual, I'm going to
have to do all the work myself to make sure it's done right. Or, at
least that I only have myself to blame :)
I appreciate all the advice and offers of help from the list.
-Shalyn
