[Vwdiesel] Sandy's connundrum

I don't know this to be 100% fact, but on my 1988 1.6L Jetta turbo diesel, I
was told you couldn't time it as the previous mechanic had somehow put the
flywheel on the wrong way or something. I don't know how he did it. (or did
he?) but the car was purchased from my bro-in-law who's been a diesel/gas
mechanic most of his life and is known not to tell "stories".
Car got 49MPG day in/day out.
