[Vwdiesel] starting a freshly installed engine ??

When my 79 rabbit diesel threw a rod through the side of the block off #1
piston and knocked the water pump off the block as well. I went to the
salvage yard and picked up an 82 diesel engine. I swapped them out and to
get it started I pulled it down the road with my truck. It didn't take long
to crank right up. Not sure if this is an ok procedure but it worked and it
saved the battery and starter. The engine ran fine and lasted a long time
after that.

I could use some advice on starting a freshly installed NA 1.6 in an 82
vanagon.

The engine was running fine and started easily when it was pulled from the
donar vehicle.

It cranks fine and all dash lights work, but we can not get it to fire in
the
receiving 82 vanagon, I suspect a fuel supply problem since we have current
to the glowplugs and the pump switch.

Any tricks, secrets for a diesel newbie? Thanks!
