[Vwdiesel] Injection pump talk/tuning - experiencing longer cranking starts

I'm a returning vw diesel owner, basically a newbie. I'm experiencing
longer cranking startups. I have a 81 1.6 na pickup 188k miles. Here
are several symptoms: 15-20sec glow plug light, rarely stays started
first fire up, warm restart a little better, runs well after several minutes.
The car has set for more than a year and I'm 200 miles into the first
tank of fresh fuel. Low temps in Chicago have been in the 30's. At 
highway speeds i notice an occasional flicker of the wts light.
I doubt it will start when temps drop further and I'll be taking the train.
How does one become a pump gang apprentice, is there a journeymen
in Chicago willing to run a clinic. ray
