At
highway speeds i notice an occasional flicker of the wts light.

 ??? What's the wts light?
I think yours is the second mention of longer cranking, etc to start.
My thoughts to the first post regarding this is to check the battery
or the cables and strongly consider upgrading to 6V sized cable/s.
The engine will crank a LOT faster and generally start that much
faster as well.
Ray, have you checked the glow plugs to see that all of them are
working? Starting hard and especially dying after starting, first, are
you pulling out the cold start cable and is it adjusted for full travel?
Next is check out the glow plugs and battery/cranking speed. Is
the idle speed a tad slow, timing correct or could the injectors be
about due for a change? Since my brother-in-law had a diesel
parked all winter for this, I have to mention checking that the air
filter is clean as well. Good time to change the fuel filter if it's been
a few years too.
Since yours was parked, is algae a possibility? That'd plug a fuel
filter pronto!
