But then corrosion in the cooling system would be a
factor. There are VW diesels that have been marinized,
and I know that at least some of them use a kind of a
radiator that just brings in outside water and
transfers the heat from the engine coolant to that.
But inside the engine is still normal antifreeze and
water mix.

But yes, I would also go for the normal horizontal
mounting of the engine and concentrate my tinkering
and custom work to making an outdrive work with that.
In fact I've got a spare engine here that I have that
in mind for, but it's way down on the list of
projects...
