Re: Relays,
I've been having trouble with a MIL. Good
'ole VAG-COM said intermittent glow plug
circuit.
Tried the "Output Test Function". Relay
clicked, for sure, but lights didn't dim
at all.
I removed the relay from the car. I pried
it open *carefully* on the bench. There
was a build up of a brownish material
(silver dust) inside the relay housing,
right next to the contacts.
I finished the contacts with 150 grit
sandpaper, and wiped the housing clean.
Should have used emory cloth, but didn't
find any.
Snapped it back together. Same Vag-Com
"output test". Lights dim now. I
cleared the DTC's. I'll know if it
works when I go driving tomorrow.
CAUTION: Finishing the relay contacts
like I did, screws the finish on
the contacts. The relay is more
likely to stick shut now.
If something breaks after you try this,
you get to keep the pieces ;-)
If the DTC (MIL) light returns to normal,
I'll buy a new relay. How much are they?
