[Vwdiesel] re-ring done, but no start

well, i don't know about most of them, but when i
managed to set my dad's vanagon pump 180 off it
started right up. lots of white smoke, and it would
only climb a hill in 1st, but it ran. i reset that
thing a few times before i finally managed to find the
right mark! (it was the first one i ever tried to
time.)

and i remember the dial indicator acting exactly the
same whether i was on the correct cylinder or not.

this was all on a brand new rebuilt (by me) engine, so
it had plenty of compression.
