The slit belt idea is a clever idea (why wouldn't I think of that?)

But I would disagree with the belt slipping (cog hopping) with the tensioner
released, or even off the bolt.
No way is it going to jump cogs with the tensioner on, but in minimum
position. It's difficult enough to even get the belt on the sprockets with
the tensioner on but released.
Next one I do, I'll try to get it to cog-hop with the tensioner removed,
just to prove the theory.
I might try the half-belt trick too, although I have no trouble with my cam
mark technique, which I would do anyway (belt and braces).
It is such a relief not to have to take off the cam cover, or not to have to
loosen the cam bolt and re-tighten it.
Reduces it to a sort of a "side of the road" job.
