  After reading the stuff on that link they use the gold foil as a shield 
FROM 
heat rather than a radiator for heat.  I understand using it for connections. 

Pinball machine contacts are all gold so never use abrasives if you clean 
any.  Paper shopping bag, maybe denim nothing more abrasive.  I'd just 
forgotten (if I knew) why they used all that gold foil on satellites.  That 
site 
said an oz of gold, a bit over 1 cubic cm I think, would foil out to about 
the 
size of a small bedroom and would draw into, 80 km of wire!
