Nice rant. I totally agree. Been privileged to have full access to an
orchard
shop since ever. :-) The first air compressor was an old, large size, O2
tank with a belt driven refrigerator compressor and motor on it. There was
a 120psi blow-off and a light switch to turn it on and off. The upgrade to a
4hp Sears compressor and tank was a real blessing. With the new shop
came a two stage 5hp with 80 gallon tank. Yippee! :-)
I bought a "jitterbug" 1/3 sheet sander, and cheap DA when I was 16 for
a repaint on the Mustang. I soon added a long board sander from a pawn
shop, and the cheapskates actually bought a Harbor Freight 1/2" impact.
Then a replacement and after that one got weak or died as well, they
actually got one of the ~$70 models instead of the ~$35 ones. WHAT
A DIFFERENCE!!! Spend a little extra on the 1/2" impact wrench! Dad
and I picked up a 3/8 butterfly and ratchet. Two HUGE time savers! I added
a couple air brushes and the compressor came with an inexpensive
Craftsman paint gun. I finally added a straight grinder (great with Boeing
Surplus carbide rasps for head porting!), picked up an angle grinder at a
pawn shop as well as a nice, Sharpe gun and most recently a 3" cutoff
wheel tool. Need that for Danielle's truck. The 5" (?) disk sander is the
cat's meow though! MUCH easier to handle than the old, heavy 7" angle
grinder with disk that I'd use on rare occasion. It's MUCH faster too.
I'm about covered for air tools. As Dad's said, he just can't understand
how any farmer can stay in business sitting and having coffee an hour
or two a day and NOT having a shop with a torch, welder and air!
Just wish I had time to use it more. That may be changing though.
Loren
