Hmmm.  My mom has a '99 Passat Wagon (gasser).  Last time I was
visiting, we were driving somewhere and I pulled out the owner's manual
just to look through it.  One thing that caught my eye (because it
seemed like such a good idea) was the statement that the glow plugs come
on based on the state of the driver's door.  That is, they either turned
on when the door opened or closed.  I don't remember which.  It even got
me thinking about whether there was a simple way to retrofit something
like that to my car for those cold winter mornings.
