I worked on the '83 1.6TD again this weekend. I swapped the rear springs,
rear shocks and front proportioning valve (after dismantling and cleaning it)
from an '86 parts van I have and put on a new slave cylinder and rear brake
pads. Don't know what all cured what, but it seems to have good brakes, no leaks,
no swerving, and no leaning. Took it on a 20 mile joyride this evening. The
van is just a joy to drive. It is not quite as quick as my I4 ABA 2.0L
gasser, but the 5-speed with big tires on the rear makes a very nice combo.
Certainly does a whole lot better than my '81 aircooled and the fuel gauge doesn't
dive down any where near as fast. It is comfortable cruising at 65, and
haven't met a hill yet that was too much for it (I know they are out there). There
are two 1-mile 8% grades in the area. They go from 5000 ft to 7000 ft. I
will report back when I take one of those. The rear springs and shocks
definitely improved the ride, and its very nice to have good brakes
Andrew
