This is my preferred way for starting dead cars of any
make! I've seen too many starters take a beating
trying to get something running that's been sitting
for a while, or if diesel to purge the fuel lines.
It's so much easier on the car cause the oil gets to
circulate the whole time, and it gives it a nice fast
turn over. I've had one truck that we towed for 5 or
10 miles before it would finally run, but run it did.
After a couple tanks of fuel it now runs beautifully.
Tho I definitely agree that checking to make sure that
things aren't gonna contact each other by turning it
over a couple revolutions by hand is a good idea. Then
as long as it has good fluid levels you can try to tow
start it as much as you want. If the engine is ANY
good, as Loren says, it will start. It would have to
be absolute trash or completely out of time or
something else major for it to not run.
I think the starter only cranks it over at a few
hundred RPM, max. (Anyone actually know?) Using this
way you can have it turning over at 2000 RPM for 10
minutes without sweat. Heck you could do it for hours
if you really felt like it, but that's just a little
overkill... :)
Good luck! Sounds like quite a find!
