At 02:52 PM 28/10/04 -0400, I just wish that there was some way to adjust
>the pedal travel so that I don't have to hover about 1 inch from the floor
>to get it into gear without clunking ...

the pedal should go down about an inch or more before the bearing touches,
then it should disengage quickly in the next inch or so.

If it is "draging" beyond the disengage point, it's a sign the pressure
plate and/or friction disk is warped, requiring more clearance before
completely letting go. Rust on the spline that fits in to the friction plate
can also cause drag after the disengage point, if the disk can't slide on
the spline.

With the engine stopped, press the pedal with your hand. It should move
freely the first inch or so, then meet stiff resistance. That is bearing
contact. After that, should disengage completely in the next inch or so.
