[Vwdiesel] Heater Core Electrolysis question

I'm in the middle of replacing my heater core, and had some similar 
questions. I had an old tech tell me to run a few strands of copper wire 
into the heater core, out the hose outlet, and to a ground on the firewall 
to prevent this. My old one was leaking, and I still have it (out of the 
car), so if I can do any tests to help figure out how to prevent this I'd be 
glad to, because my new one has plastic tanks and an aluminum core (which 
will die fast with electrolysis). While everything's apart I want to make 
sure I do this right, because I don't want to do it again for another 20 
years...
