Actually they used water injection to retard burn and prevent preignition to
allow burning of very low octane fuels. A 1928 John Deere D could burn
diesel fuel and pull it's heart out if started on gas and switched over to
diesel when hot. I've actually done this so I know it works. The times were
that distillate which was sort of gas and kerosene mixed was most commonly
available, but too low an octane to burn well without knocking.

Water injection increases power by intake charge cooling and allowing more
advance to be ran without knock.

Also can be used to increase power output. Old time John Deere diesel
tractors used h20 injection to
cool the piston centers to get more pull out of the tractor. Many oldtimers
figured the extra umph
came from the engine becoming a steam engine. Also with a bit of methanol
mixed in it was used in both
aircraft piston engines, aircraft turbine engines, and atleast one muscle
car, pontiac I think, to
boost engine output. Biggest concern is to much h2o and hydrolocking the
engine, a real big concern
with our diesels.Justin
