[Vwdiesel] Direction of coolant flow in radiator

I have a Vanagon converted to 1.9TD. When I run at about 3500 rpm on
the highway the water temperature gauge gradually increases until the
overheat light comes on. I checked the coolant hose arrangement and it
seems that the hose from the head goes to the top of the radiator
instead of the bottom as shown in the Bentley manual. I would have
thought that hot water entering the top would be correct as it would
have a tendency to drop as it cooled.
If the hoses are in fact reversed, do you think it could be the reason
for the high coolant temperatures when the engine is under load?
