[Vwdiesel] Direction of coolant flow in radiator

On my Rabbit and Passat TDI, the hose from the head goes to the top of
the radiator.

We are talking about the SIDE of the head vs the back of the head
correct? The fitting at the back of the head recirculates some water
back to the water pump.

Do you have the proper thermostat? There should be a flat disc on the
end of the shaft that controls by-pass flow.

I have no clue on the arrangement of a Vanagon radiator. How is airflow
managed through this radiator?
